What about the number of birds, not species? When I lived at Dajarra (south of Mt Isa) in the early 60s (1960s not 1860s - to stop Tony Russell's response), most weekend "lie ins" ended by squinting out the window at hundreds (maybe millions - sounded like it) of Galahs and Little Corellas. Occasionally, there were patches of ground between the birds. A quick rifle shot in the air (through the open window) changed the colour of the sky and gave another 10 minutes of slumber.
