The Canada Goose is still present at the mouth of the Shoalhaven River
associating with about 30 Black Swans, feeding on estuarine grasses. A
telescope is useful if it is on the far side of the estuary from the caravan
park.

It is a very large bird that fits well with the subspecies maxima that is
the dominant form in NZ. Thanks to Richard and Damian Baxter and Phil
Hansbro for letting me tag along and Tony Palliser for checking it out
yesterday. Thanks also to the people who initially reported the bird-sorry I
do not have your names.

Although there are some Canada Geese in captivity in Australia (5
individuals present at Western Plains Zoo, Dubbo are the only ones held
captive in an Australian Zoo), chances are looking good for this being a
vagrant from NZ.

Canada Geese from NZ have been recorded as vagrants from New Caledonia, Lord
Howe Island, Chatham, Kermadec and Auckland Islands.

Cheers

Dion
