Gavin

I was very interested to hear about the Blue Bonnets just north of
Jondaryan.

In Dec 1990, we moved to Jandowae. For those not familiar with Southern
Queensland, Jondaryan is on the Darling Downs, about 150 km (as the crow
flies) west of Brisbane. Jandowae is a further 110 km (same crow) to the
north-west on the northern edge of the Darling Downs.

When I arrived in Jandowae, there were no Blue Bonnets to be found within 50
km in any direction. The closest known, regular, sightings occurred about
another 100 km to the west.

By 1993 they were regularly sited just to the west of the township and by
1995, the occasional bird was seen to the south and north as well. I left
the area in 1995. In mid 2000 I led a club outing to Jandowae and found
Blue Bonnets in the township itself as well as seeing them on the roadside
well east of Jandowae.

Originally, I thought that a dry season forced the birds to move but they
have been gradually spreading eastwards since 1992 at least.

Where is this changed distribution going to stop? Are we going to see this
species spread to the coast in dry seasons?

Cheers

Terry Pacey
