Hello all,

I agree with all the good advice already given by others on this topic and just wish to add: with spotlighting don't expect too much and don't give up too soon - just enjoy the magic of being out in the bush at night, listen as much as looking, and if you've chosen your habitat well, sooner or later you will be rewarded with something exciting.

Like any wildlife observation, it also helps to be reasonably quiet - I find that when spotlighting alone I consistently see and hear more than when with a group.

However, during winter this year I led a series of spotlight walks for local residents here in the Blue Mountains and each walk we saw at least something of interest - not necessarily birds every time but possums, gliders, a bandicoot, frogs and even spiders (which can be picked out from a surprising distance by their eyes which shine like little jewels in the spotlight). One night we had a couple of
Owlet-nightjars attracted to the beam of the spotlight where they hawked
for insects. (snip)

G'day All,

Well I'm hurt and dismayed that someone whom I thought, for a long time, was a very nice, prim and proper lady has finally shown her colours eh? I wonder how Carol Proberts would feel if she had finally gotten the kids to bed only to have a "Loon" shine a 500 megawatt torchbeam through their nest. It's tough enough trying to raise young ones but when your sleep depraved as well, tisk tisk tisk ... if it ain't the flash camera's causing mayhem over at the Penguin Colony then it's this lass NOT saying a word about were to always aim the beam.

Well I will not be sending her any Jim Beam I can tell you that tisk tisk tisk.

Shorn Pen waanders off to have another look at the 12 Pied Oystercatchers close to the parked "Cafe Submarine" looks like a pair of turnstone as well? hmmm bay water must be good at the moment eh? famous last words that I hope is NOT the case? cackling he gets out of here fast .....
