Certain Aboriginal relatives of mine used fruit of Strychnine tree,
Strychnos lucida to give their 'singing to death' an added kick. And I'm
not talking centuries ago - my brother-in-law was 'sung to death' in
1989, and then these old men went after his (and my) son Peterson
Nganjmirra. .
Many think that because birds can eat such fruit it must be safe. I
always warn birders I guide, any visitors I meet, and tour operators,
about the dangers of this fruit. There is also a warning in my bird
book (p. 81).
The seeds of some grevilleas contain a blistering agent that will easily
remove your skin - something else to watch out for!
Oh, fortunately we were able to warn the old men off and they seemed
satisfied with killing his less respected brother (they drove a stake
through his heart) I say 'fortunately' because they were intent on
killing all my sons and grandsons.
