Hello Dr. Darryl,

I was just wondering if any study was was carried out, in the book, on magpies defending their mates? did you know that John Gamblin lives with magpies?

Kind Regards, Clair D. Loon

Dear Birders

The several queries about swooping birds etc forces me, quite reluctantly, to tell you about my new book summarising everything known about the Australia-wide phenomenon of magpie attacks on humans (see below). Although its a popular science book, all the claims are referenced and most of it is based on research we have conducted ourselves in Brisbane. Quite a few studies are being prepared for publication at the moment and I am very happy to provide details and copies to anyone particularly interested.

Cheers

'MAGPIE ALERT: LEARNING TO LIVE WITH A WILD NEIGHBOUR' (University of New South Wales Press - RRP $29.95, ISBN 0 86840 668 6), is now available from
Angus &Robertson/Bookworld bookshops everywhere and 'Naturally Queensland'
in Brisbane. The results of 7 years of intensive study of aggressive magpies, this popular science book examines the many myths and hypotheses surrounding one of Australia's favourite - yet potentially dangerous - birds. Many discoveries of the behaviour of this familiar species point to new ways for managing and coexisting with 'the maggie'.
