Dear all and particularly Bruce Cox
Was at this excellent wetland area on Sunday last with
2 companions. During the 2.5 hrs we were there, saw 46
species but no sight or sound of the Noisy Pitta.
Best sightings were:
Pair of Grey Goshawks performing courtship flight,
until an A.Raven flew up and proceeded to monster the
white female - the grey male deserted her, quickly
getting out the way. Also a Whistling Kite and Brown
Goshawk.
At the Katoa entry was a Buff-banded Rail - no
Baillons. Topknot and White-headed Pigeons, lots of
very noisy E.Whipbirds, two female Golden Whistlers
competing for one beautiful male and singing their
hearts out, large numbers of Yellow-faced and
White-cheeked Honeyeaters, a few White-naped, Lewins,
Little and Red Wattlebirds, Little Grassbirds in the
open, White-throated Treecreeper and Yellow Robin -
all nice birds to see in an urban area.
We then went on to Long Reef (1-2.30 pm) but despite a
strong southerly wind, pelagic sights were low - one
black Giant Petrel flew south as we were descending
the hill top, several Gannets (10?), a pair of
Double-banded Plovers (male in beautiful breeding
plumage)and some (presumably) Wedge-tail Shearwaters
far out to sea. Four sp. Cormorants, Silver Gulls and
Crested Terns. Very disappointing - all the good ones
must have been further north up the coast.
