Hi all,
Tipped off by local landcarer and birdwatcher Kevin Smith, this afternoon I
saw an Australian Bustard near Waikerie, SA. A new tick for me and a great
one!. At around 50 ms distance I had beautiful views in the late afternoon
sunlight and took a whole heap of photos - which I will put on my website in
due course. The drought presumably pushes these interior birds towards the
more settled - and irrigated - areas, with also hundreds of emus turning up
in this part of the state.
The bird has been around for a few days at least and directions are:
Along the Morgan to Renmark road, about 21 km E of the Waikerie turnoff, is
a dirt track heading south (Devlins Pound Road). Using this as reference
point, head around 800 m towards Morgan (West) along the Morgan to Renmark
road. Here a dirt track heads north. The bird was found on a recently
ploughed field a few 100 ms along this dirt track. It has also been seen
further along this track where there are irrigated fields.
Cheers
