Greetings all
Down to our beloved Royal National Park and the riparian rainforest strip
known as Wattle Forest! Where we begin in the picnic ground, skirt the edge
of the Hacking River (no kingfishers here today!) and then plunge into the
rainforest. This strip of river edge was badly degraded but bush
regeneration groups have removed most weeds and now it is in relative health
... despite the odd flood and the bushfire in Xmas last year that went right
into the palm jungle section.
Today we managed 35 species of bird in the 1.5 hours we set aside for
this... and the special ones were Topknot pigeons, in a flock (no sign of
any hunting Grey Goshawk), the Crested Shrike Tit, lots of Eastern Yellow
Robins, a stunning Golden Whistler, three varieties of Scrub Robins, a pair
of Australian Ground Thrush (little vibrating jumps on the mud before taking
our dainty morsels of food!) and the secretive, skulking Pilotbird ...
rather nondescript except it is so damn difficult to see! Not seen were the
summer migrants!!! Not yet!
