Dear All,
I have finally got around to setting up a
listserver dedicated to cetaceans.
The main emphasis is on providing observers with a
central point to send sightings. You would be amazed at the variety of cetaceans
that get recorded from the Australian coast each year.
No end of people have information but have no idea
who to send it to. In truth, there are State and Federal databases and this
forum is certainly not set up to undermine those processes. Hopefully, it will
in fact enhance the amount of sightings received to the benefit of those
organisations. If there is anyone out there who has this as their
responsibility, then do get in touch. One thing I would like to do at some stage
is encourage observers to record sightings in a standard format, perhaps via a
website form.
The archive contains about 20 messages which I have
just put on. These are sightings of species that I have been sent or heard about
since the beginning of the year (including False Killer Whales, Orcas, Sperm
Whales, Strap-toothed Beaked Whale, Blue Whales, Humpbacks etc.). I have also
included two of my recent trip reports that I deposited on UKCetnet regarding
New Zealand and our successful Blue Whale boat trip into the Otway Basin this
year.
For those of you who are familiar with Yahoogroups,
it should be simple to subscribe. For those of you who are not, I would
recommend visiting the website and signing up to Yahoo. I have never had any
problems with any junk mail from any yahoogroup listserver and you do not
receive marketing material from them. I have discretion over who is a member and
who is not. Anyone posting messages that are not in the interest of the group, I
will unsubscribe myself.
Once signed up, you can choose to either receive
messages in your inbox or to read them online. Given that the number of members
is likely to be very small, you won't expect to be flooded with messages.
Information on subscribing is below.
I hope that this is of use to some of you out there
and will enable me to keep things like this off birding-aus once and for
all.
Regards,
Simon.

I would recommend signing up through the website as
it allows you access to the file vault (e.g. for uploading pictures) and you can
review past messages.
If this is a problem, then you can subscribe by
