Hi Birding-aussers. Read your report Laurie but
there was no debate with the Gibson's Albatross. Size was not the underlying
factor for ID but age/plumage, head/bill, overall jizz etc came into it. The
'debate' was over the 2 young 'Black-brows' both T. melanophrys and probably a
couple of years apart in age. Based on sightings and museum specimens T.
impavida, (Campbell Albatross) is yet to be recorded in Qld
waters.
Here is a brief summary of what was sighted for the
day;
Southern Giant Petrel - 1 released
Cape Petrel - 5
Providence Petrel - 10
Kermadec Petrel - 2, both dark
Fairy Prion - 8
Wedge-tailed Shearwater - 187 (spring's
coming)
Fluttering Shearwater - 3
Hutton's Shearwater - 97
Fluttering/Hutton's - 4
Gibson's Albatross - 1, mature bird
Black-browed Albatross - 2
Wilson's Storm Petrel - 5
Australasian Gannet - 2
Brown Skua - 2
Crested Tern - 8
Sooty Tern - 36
A claimed Slender-billed Prion out wide, will have
to be submitted to BQRAC by the observer claiming it. There are still 4 spaces
available for the Sept. 21st trip. Cheers - Paul Walbridge.
