A Buff-banded Rail was on the Elsternwick Golf Course on 8
August, perhaps the bird seen nearby from 31 March. That
day there was also a Black-tailed Native-hen at the larger
lake in the south of Elsternwick Park.
While I was away (on 22/7) Ian Parsons saw 2 Pink-eared Duck
at that lake. Unfortunately he did not have his cameras with
him - he's videoed most of our recent rarities including the
Singing Honeyeater, most recently recorded near Sandringham
Harbour on 31/7. The Great Crested Grebe was last seen
there on 2/8.
Musk Lorikeets are unusually numerous and widespread for
August. In contrast White-plumed Honeyeater numbers seem low
and there has been only ONE record of Grey Shrike-thrush.
Are the last two species relatively scarce throughout the
Melbourne area this year?
