G'day,

I have been copied on a posting by Laurie Knight about early records of
Latham's Snipe in SEQ and thought I'd better report back.

Today, August 9th, there was a single Latham's Snipe at Buckley's Hole,
Bribie Island. The bird was actively feeding which is not always the case
with snipe in these parts during the summer. Note that the water levels at
Buckley's Hole have now dropped to reveal a tantalising amount of muddy
margins. Birds seen here recently include Red-kneed Dotterel (2 since
24/7), Spotless Crake (an immature since 1/8, suggesting breeding, and an
adult 9/8), Baillon's Crake (6/8) and up to 6 Lesser Crested Terns on the
adjacent beach. (Please note - Tim Murphy) The Hoary-headed Grebe and
Australian Shovelers have not been seen recently.

Other birds on Bribie include Double-banded Plover (21 at Kakadu Beach on
31/7, almost all in pristine breeding plumage - they'll be here for a while
yet), Fluttering Shearwater (still well over 100 in Moreton Bay) and
White-fronted Tern (one along the beach at Woorim on 1/8; please note - Bob
Inglis). Of local interest is that Emus continue to be seen on the island,
Black Swans are in good numbers in the Pumicestone Passage at the moment,
and a Little Eagle was seen on the island about a week ago.

Even more interest has been shown in the recent opening of the Bayview
Pizzeria, on the left a little further south from Scoopy's towards Buckley's
Hole. Wonderful and wonderfully large pizzas!

Cheers - Trevor Ford.

PS Can anyone identify a Salvin's Prion without touching it?
