UK charity calls for tougher stance
Staff Reporter
The head of a UK charity has urged the Maltese Government to crack down on
illegal hunting.
Peter Cole of Restore UK told The Malta Independent that illegal hunting has
to be controlled and the government must enforce the law.
Restore UK placed an advertisement on the front page of last Saturday?s
Times of London, calling for a boycott of Malta and Cyprus because of the
?barbaric? illegal hunting taking place on the two islands. The British
newspaper has a circulation of around 800,000.
?We had no intention of attacking the Maltese and Cypriots, but wanted to
attract the attention of the respective governments to push the
implementation of the existing laws. We are not even asking for new laws,
just that the existing ones are followed,? he said.
Mr Cole said if Malta wants to join the European Union, it should abide by
its rules.
?If a country wants to join an organisation where illegal hunting is
prohibited, then the country has to abide by those laws and make sure it
eliminates illegal hunting completely,? he said.
Restore UK, Mr Cole said, was not trying to stop hunting, a tradition in
both countries. However, he said brutal and illegal hunting must be
eliminated.
?The brutality of the tradition is what we are concerned about. In many
parts of the world people kill animals for food. We are not asking people to
stop killing animals, it?s the way in which this is done that worries us,?
he said.
When asked about the cost of placing the advert in the Times of London, an
estimated Lm4,000, Mr Cole said although the advert was expensive, ?there
are a lot of birds out there.?
Mr Cole said Restore UK had received a great deal of feedback after placing
the advert. He said many organisations and individuals had responded,
?thanking us for bringing this to light.?
