Birdline Victoria Update No. 84
For the week ending: 14 July, 2002

After a week off with the lethargy brought about by nothing more debilitating than the flu (as if that's not enough), Birdline is back strong as ever, with lots of great birds to go and see!
 
Sightings

14 July

A Black Falcon was seen flying over the Spit Lagoons at the Werribee Sewage Farm, thanks Joy Tansey.

 

11 July

A Powerful Owl can be seen in the Botanic Gardens at the moment, on the right hand (eastern) side of the path just before the Perennial Border - enter via F Gate (Birdwood Ave) and follow the main path for c100m, thanks Hugo Phillips.

 

9 July

A Wedge-tailed Eagle was perched on a fence post, very near the Paradise Road Ponds at the Western Treatment Plant . (37 59 87 - 144 33 99), thanks Shirley Cameron .

 

9 July

There was a Pallid Cuckoo just out of Maffra, and a Fan-tailed Cuckoo was sitting on the fence at Duncan Fraser's Maffra home.

 

7 July

A White-bellied Sea-eagle was seen at Lake Hattah in the Hattah-Kulkyne National Parka and a pair of Mulga Parrots on the Lendrook Plain, thanks Isaac Clarey.

 

7 July

An enormous flock of 200+ Australian Pelican was seen on the Geelong Road, near Altona – heading in the direction of Port Phillip Bay, thanks Tim Dolby

 

7 July

A Striated Fieldwren seen at the Werribee Sewage Farm in the heather near the junction of Austin Road and Kirk Point, thanks Angela Kirkwood.

 

6 July

One Pink-eared Duck was seen at Banyule Flats, Heidelberg, thanks Celia Browne.

 

6 July

The 2 Cape Barren Geese were again seen at 2 at Paradise Road Lagoons, Werribee Sewerage Farm, thanks Neville Pamment.


Updates

The Powerful Owl was not seen at the Botanical Gardens on the 14th, thanks Fiona Anderson

 

On the 24th of June the Azure Kingfisher was still at the confluence of Merri Ck and the Yarra right under the freeway bridges and 20 m downstream of the Alexandra Parade drain outfall, thanks Neville Pamment.

 

The four Brolga were still present at Reedy Lake, Lake Connewarre (Lake Moolap Rd entrance) on the 22nd of June check the last ploughed paddock on the right hand (western) side of Moolap road just before you get to the wetland thanks Rohan Clarke.

 

At Lake Lorne the number of Freckled Duck has increased from 30 to approximately 150 birds!  On the 22nd of June they were near the main road and were very easy to see, thanks Rohan Clarke.
