I showed a couple from Arizona two Lewin's Rails on Sunday thanks to advice
from Rod Gardner.
Go to the eastern end of Fishermans Road, Malabar and park in the car park.
Walk 100 metres along the low fence to the end. Take the short track (6
metres) to the left and play your tape. The rails live in the bitou bush
which cover the back of the rifle range. Interestingly, there is a lot of
dead bitou bush (killed by Bush Regeneration?) and we heard our first one
calling in that.
The birds came within a metre thank goodness as the bush is very dense.
Rod saw one a few days ago at the 'old' site along the track by the
embankment near Magic Point. It was out in the open for what seemed like
minutes. One wonders how common this bird is and where it will live when
the acres of Bitou Bush are removed.
