Steve Clark's report of Hooded Robin's in the Grampians is some good news.

The species has suffered numerous local extinctions in its previous range of far
west (and elsewhere in) Victoria and I believe the new Bird Australia atlas will
show this decline.

Hooded Robin have been listed as a threatened species on the Victorian Flora and
Fauna Guarantee (FFG) Act. The Scientific Advisory Committee's Final
Recommendation Report on the species makes the following point (amongst
otthers):

'The major factors contributing to the decline in Hooded Robins in Victoria are
ongoing and have lead to local extinctions of the species across the state.
Hooded Robins are sedentary, ground feeding birds and hence are particularly
susceptible to changes in the understorey layer and exposure to predators.
Woodland birds are one of the bird groups most affected by threatening processes
as they nest, live and/or feed on the ground or in the shrub layer.'

Hooded Robin are also included as part of the' Victorian Temperate wodland Bird
Community' which has also been listed as a threatened community under the FFG
Act.

Copies of the recommendation reports are available from me for those who are
interested. Please contact me direct and supply a postal address.

cheers
