G'day all
After 16 years of fruitless searching, I finally manage to find Hooded Robins in
the Grampians (western Victoria) again. I had a regular spot along the Black
Range road, west of Cherrypool in the early 1980's but the birds disappeared
from here sometine around 1986. Several visits per year to the area have failed
to find them. Robert Farnes told me of his sighting of a pair in the area in
April 2001 so I was still hopeful that they were around.
Yesterday I found a single female and then a pair. Lots of apparently suitable
areas had recently been harvested for firewood and it was only when I got into
relatively undisturbed forest that I found the Robins (and a good variety of
other birds).
Thirty-eight species in the forest with the other highlights being Little
Lorikeets, Black-chinned, Fuscous and Yellow-tufted Honeyeaters, several Scarlet
Robins and Varied Sittellas and Brown Treecreepers feeding together on the
ground at times.
