I received the following request from Dr Robert Payne of the University of
Michigan. Can anyone be of help on this? We have turned up a photo of
Erythrura papuana, from Bruce Beehler. Also - if anyone has photos of
juvenile estrildids from the Bismarcks this would be appreciated too!

Subject: New Guinea finches
Dear Ron,
I am working up our ideas on relationships in the Estrildidae, from our
mtDNA work and from mouth markings and colors. There are several New
Guinea estrildids for which I have not found observations or photos of the
mouths, of nestlings or juveniles. Perhaps you know some of these.
Main lack is Oreostruthus fuliginosus, a nest was found in 1968 and
reported in New Guinea Bird Society Newsletter no. 32, p. 3, 1968, by Dick
Donaghey, and the report said "Mr Donaghey is preparing some nbotes on it
for publication" but I've not seen a later reference. Wonder if it has a
mouth like Australian firetails, or something else.
Other New Guinea birds for which I don't know mouths are Erythrura
papuana, Lonchura montana, L. monticola and some other Lonchura.
best wishes, Bob
