Chris
Being in the Western Directorate of NSW NPWS I am surrounded by colleagues
who visit these locations regularly. The consensus is that while it is
dry out west now it will be dryer in October. The days will be cool to
warm (obviously warmer in Sturt than Mungo) and the nights cold. Because
things are drying out the number of birds may not be what people were
seeing 12 to 18 months ago but they will be there.
The lakes (those that are full - I believe the Menindee Lakes are all but
dry) are attracting large numbers of waterbirds and chats. Large numbers
of Orange Chats were seen at Peery Lake, north of Wilcannia, last week. I
suggest you contact the local NPWS offices in regards what has water and
what hasn't.
If you were to go out in July you could participate in the Outback
Twitchathon. This has been designed to be an enjoyable event, encouraging
people to get out to the outback in the Year of the Outback. Simply
record the number of species in any 36 hour period commencing at 6AM and
finishing at 6PM the next day. Get people to sponsor you and raise money
for Newhaven. The period you suggest is outside the official Twitchathon
period of 26 July to 18 August but this shouldn't matter (unless you are
seriously out to win it). Registration forms can be obtained from the
Birds Australia Sydney Office - email
Feel free to get in touch if you want any more information.
Cheers
