Review of NSW bird licensing systems
Under the current licensing system for bird keepers in NSW, anyone can hold up
to 19 endangered or protected birds without a licence. Some people have abused
this, with birds that have been illegally trapped or stolen in other parts of
Australia resurfacing legally in NSW.
The National Parks and Wildlife Service has reviewed bird licensing systems
across Australia, and is now proposing new systems for NSW. The proposal is
designed to make it easier for the NPWS to detect illegal trapping of birds,
especially for species of major conservation concern. However, the new systems
should not penalise the thousands of people who keep just one native bird as a
pet. The NPWS hopes to introduce the new licensing systems from 1 October 2002.

page. The discussion paper is on public exhibition until 31 July 2002, and you
can tell us what you think by sending us a submission.
