G'day all
I had last week off work and spent some of the time birding.
Monday 27th May, forest below Mt. Sturgeon, southern Grampians:
Southern Emu-wrens. A pair in their usual patch of stringybark and heath. Not
calling but sitting on top of a tiny banksia in a light rain shower.
Tuesday 28th May, Portland district with Rob Farnes:
Rob found me a new bird - a Lewin's Rail in Fawthrop's Lagoon. A brief but
clear view. They are apparently regular here subject to tides and your
patience. We searched the harbour for White-fronted Terns without success but
did see a Brush Bronzewing on the track to Point Danger and studied the bill
size, tail length and calls of a Forest Raven. Both Forest and Little Ravens
were calling near Fawthrop's Lagoon.
Thursday 30th May, Nelson:
The boat ramp area near the store was empty of people so the birds were all
close. Lots of Night Herons being very active and visible. A Little Egret was
great to see so close. About 20 Black-tailed Native-hens were on the grassy
clifftop across the river and there were a few in the carpark overlooking the
river mouth. There were a pair of Beuatiful Firetails feeding on the grass near
this carpark also. Best birds seen on the estaury walk were Australian Hobby,
Olive Whistler, Caspian Tern and a single Red-necked Avocet (apparently Avocets
are rarely reported from this part of the world).
Thursday 30th May, Piccaninnie Ponds Conservation Park (in SA a few km west of
Nelson):
A well known spot for Orange-bellied Parrots but none on this occasion. I saw
one Blue-winged Parrot however, and good numbers of Double-banded Plovers on the
beach (with Red-necked Stints, Turnstones and Red-capped Plovers).
Cheers
