On the subject of birds flocking in winter, Bush Stone-Curlews have been
particularly easy to find at the University of Queensland of late, where
loose flocks of up to 11 birds have been gathered around the car parks below
the Hartley Teakle building. While I wouldn't exactly describe them as tame
(the growl they utter at close range and that penetrating stare of theirs
aren't especially friendly), they can be approached very closely, even to
less than a metre without moving.

I remember seeing 13 birds scattered around the entrance to the Hartley
Teakle prior to a lecture during my undergrad days in 1993. I'll always
remember the students being spooked by these gangling, weird birds that
hissed at them as they walked past!
