Hi all,
I have just returned from a week in Gluepot accompanied by Grev and
Margaret reidy who are staying for another week.
Highlights were:
Scarlet Chested Parrots: 2 males sitting in "the tree" at Quinn's Dam 12
May. These males stayed for some minutes sitting facing us in the sun at
about 8.00 am. They were glorious. Later on a female was also seen by
others. As it rained about 12mms that evening and intermittently over
the week the parrots weren't seen again.
Red Lored Whistler: encountered two birds at different localities
singing giving excellent views.
Black Eared Miner: Had good views of some definite BEMs in one flock.
Also saw another flock fly over the rangers quarters on my last morning,
some of which were at least hybrids. The only feature I was able to see
was the tail tips. Some were pale some dark.
Striated Grasswren: Seen and heard in different locations obtained some
excellent views.
Regent Parrots: also present on 12 May only, for the same reason as the
SCPs.
Chestnut Quailthrush, Mallee Heathwren, Southern Scrubrobin, Purple
Gaped, Striped and White Fronted Honeyeaters among others.
The rangers Rod and Karen were very helpful and some of my best birding
was done while assisting them with a Mallee Fowl transect.
Unfortunately I didn't see any Mallee Fowl although I did see many old
mounds.
Truly a great place and well worth the effort to get there.
