What is the status of Barking Owls in South Australia?

Over recent weeks I have been alerted by strange nocturnal noises which seem
to indicate that we might have a Barking Owl around here. The neighbours
(also birders) have also been hearing strange noises, including loud
screeching.

Last night around 7:30pm we (and the neighbours) heard a guttural growling
outside. Before we could find the bird it flew off calling. The last I heard
of it seemed to be some 300-500 metres away. All the neighbourhood dogs (not
many around where we are) were highly excited.

This would be a new species for me but I am thinking that I might need a
stake out to see it. Would it mind if I built a campfire while I wait???
(The nights are coming in rather chilly)

Happy birding,
