Hi Birders,
Between my son Tim and myself, we
have checked out about 20 patches of flowering Swamp Mahogany on the Central
Coast this last week, from Swansea through Catherine Hill Bay, Munmorah,
Toukley, Bateau Bay, Killarney Vale, Berkeley Vale, Tuggerah and and Chittaway
Bay looking for Regents and Swiftees. Regents have only been found at South
Swansea, first seen on 28 April, subsequent visits on 4 May and today revealed
five birds none of which are colour banded. They were spending more time hawking
insects than feeding on the nectar of the Swamp Mahogany at each visit. No Swift
Parrots have been seen.
At the other sites there are plenty
of Rainbow, Musk and Little Lorrikeets, many more of the latter than is the
usual case, perhaps indicating that they too have come to the coast because of
the lack of flowering on the Tablelands and Slopes. Honeyeaters at the nectar
flow include White-cheeked & New Hollard, Eastern Spinebill & Scarlet,
Red & Little Wattlebirds, Yellow-faced, Fuscous, White-naped, and
Lewins. Even Red-whiskered Bul Buls were seen taking nectar from the Swamp
Mahoganies, while Spangled Drongos are present at most sites
visted.
Completed Regent Honeyeater report
forms were posted to you David yesterday.
