Two article on birds in the latest online Nature Science Update.

The first describes artificially defeating Black-capped Chicadees males
in song contests and then examining the impact on female fidelity by
looking at the DNA of the offspring.  Apparently if a female hears her
partner losing song contests she is more likely to surrepitously mate
with other males.

The second article describes research showing bird species which see
better in low light start the dawn chorus:
