Two article on birds in the latest online Nature Science Update. The first describes artificially defeating Black-capped Chicadees males in song contests and then examining the impact on female fidelity by looking at the DNA of the offspring. Apparently if a female hears her partner losing song contests she is more likely to surrepitously mate with other males. http://www.nature.com/nsu/020429/020429-14.html The second article describes research showing bird species which see better in low light start the dawn chorus: http://www.nature.com/nsu/020429/020429-3.html Free registration might be required to see the articles.
