Hello All!
I'm new to this list, but would like to let you know
about recent sitings of King Quail on French Island.
11 April - one flushed from Tankerton Rd, along the
'S' bends near Tankerton Creek! This is a most unusual
location, but it's been so dry for so long, I'm not
too surprised that they are seeking the wetter places.
17 April - 0735 hours. One flushed from edge of the
firebreak at the Pinacles, in the National Park. Flew
immediately into tall dry heath.
These point to a couple of problems for King Quail
right now;
a) a lack of suitable habitat (ie. short wet heath,
less than 10 years old. Optimum age for the species
seems to be 3-7 year old heath). More habitat burning
is required in the Park for King Quail,
b) very long, dry summer, and hardly any moist areas
left on the island.
Thankfully the 25mm rain last weekend has started to
change that. May it continue!
If someone wants to try finding a King Quail, try
finding a needle in a haystack first! Then when you've
found the needle...
Happy birding, Chris Chandler, French Island
