Birdline Victoria Update No. 71

I'm back
from my mid semester study excursion, and I am delighted with the sightings that
have come in while I've been away. I've trawled through around 200
messages on the Birding-Aus mailing list and hopefully got most of the
significant sightings mentioned there, but please let me know if I have missed
any.
I have
missed two sightings of Ospreys around Western Port Bay.
This comes hot on the heals of a sighting from August last year at
Shoreham. At the time it was reported that that bird would be only the
23rd sighting for Victoria, and only the second close to Melbourne and it might
be assumed that this is the same bird turning up again, although John Boyce, who
saw a bird on the other side of Western Port Bay at Phillip Island, said that
the bird he saw was a juvenile, so perhaps there is more than one
bird!
Sightings

April
A pair of Swift Parrots were seen along the creek that
runs through Black's Walk, just behind the scout hall in Main Street Blackburn,

5 April
A juvenile Osprey was seen at Observation Point at the
north eastern end of Phillip Island in Westernport Bay, thanks John
Boyce.
2 April
An Arctic Jaeger was seen from the Werribee Sewage Farm,
thanks Susan Anderson (?).
1 April
There were 5 Pectoral Sandpipers at Austin Road Lagoons
and at least 80 White-winged Black Terns at Little River Mouth
in the Werribee Sewage Farm, thanks Danny Rogers.
1 April
An Osprey was seen at Main Creek about 10 mins steady
walk south along the Two Bays Walking Track from the Bushrangers Bay Car Park in
the Cape Schanck National Park, thanks Charles
Silveira.
30 March
A Grey Goshawk (white phase) was seen at Eltham, some 18
km north east of Melbourne, thanks Ian Temby.
29 March - 1
April
A Red-lored Whistler, Mallee Emu-wren
and Shy Heath-wren were all seen at or near Wymlet Tank in
Murray Sunset NP during the BA VicGroup Easter campout, thanks Debra
Saxon-Campbell.
31 March
A Buff-banded Rail was seen by the Elster Creek near the
St Kilda St bridge, thanks Michael Norris
