Hi Anthea In the mid-nineties I was camping with a school group in the Cathedral Range State Park near Buxton. While on a walk with another of the leaders, a non-birder, I gave some Wonga Pigeon calls on spec. My friend was most impressed when a Wonga Pigeon flew from further up the hill, crossed the track and landed within 10 metres of us. Must say I was surprised too! This may be a little further west than your sighting.
