On Good Friday, 28 March 2002, I was beside the Yarra at Wilson Reserve, Ivanhoe, at about 11.30 am (Daylight saving time). The weather was cool and drizzly with rain increasing. Small birds such as White-browed Scrubwrens, Brown Thornbills and a Yellow Robin were fussing beside the Bailey Billabong. When I investigated I found a Fantail Cuckoo perched in a Silver Wattle about 8 ft above the ground. It called twice - the small birds greatly increased the noise level of their alarm calls and a Grey Fantail flew at it. The Cuckoo then flew off and called twice more from futher away.. Earlier that morning Brian had heard one calling in the distance near Darebin Creek. Anthea Fleming in Ivanhoe, Vic.
