Dear Birders,
I have noticed a few messages recently that point out a few errors in
HANZAB. Naturally, a production of this magnitude will always have the odd
error, but overall I think it?s a fantastic set of books. However, I do have
another error to add that I discovered in the data collection stage of my
honours thesis. In the section dealing with breeding of the Gibberbird
(Ashbyia lovensis) on page 1257, three egg sizes are quoted from Waite 1917
and White 1917. The quoted sizes are approximately 27.8 x 26.6mm. A bird of
approximately twice the mass of a chat would normally lay eggs of this size,
and as the Gibberbird is not related to the Kiwi, this is obviously an
error. I am unable to provide referenced egg dimensions for Gibberbird but
did measure a number at the Melbourne Museum and the mean average I
calculated was 20 x 15 mm.
On a different note, mum and I were at Werribee Treatment Plant two days ago
and was pleased to see an Arctic Jaeger (S. parasiticus) pursuing Silver
Gulls. Now we only have to find those Freckled duck that Shirley keeps
seeing and we can never find! Well, you win some, you lose others!
Successful birding,
Susan
