Hi birding-aus folks
I have just resubscribed after several months offline, with an observation of
Grey Goshawk (white phase) at my mother-in-law's property in Eltham, some 18 km
north east of Melbourne. I was working outside last Saturday, listening to the
hordes of Musk and Rainbow lorikeets feeding in the orchard over the Yarra
River. Periodically the Noisy Miners would give their raptor alarm calls, often
joined by Magpie-larks and the incessant shrieking of the lorikeets would reach
a crescendo as they took off from the orchard and flew overhead. On several of
these occasions I was able to see the raptor causing the panic, and during the
day saw Peregrine Falcon, Brown Goshawk (both commonly seen here) and on two
occasions the Grey Goshawk which obligingly glided overhead enabling easy
identification despite the momentary similarity with a Sulphur-crested Cockatoo.
On the second occasion, three Australian Magpies were swooping vigorously at the
goshawk with much beak clacking and calling. I had not seen a Grey Goshawk in
this area before and was delighted with this observation.

Cheers

Ian
