This morning, at 7.15 am, I arrived at the spot where I'd left the Laughing
Gull on the beach the night before, to find the beach deserted. Within less
than a minute I was joined by Andrew Stafford who had seen the bird in
flight, briefly but well, less than five minutes earlier, making its way
purposefully out into Moreton Bay and directly into a south-easterly. I
checked the general area for the next couple of hours (ok, including toast
and coffee at Scoopy's!) but could not relocate the bird. I will have
another look this afternoon and report back.

Bill Jolly is curious about any possible significance in bird name and date
of my posting of Laughing Gull on April 1st. Well, I'll send you the
photos, Bill (if they come out ok). I remember getting a phone call in the
UK once, late on March 31st, telling me of a Gyr Falcon in Devon - I'm glad
I went!

Incidentally, what I failed to mention yesterday when describing the bird,
were the broken white crescents above and below each eye ('spectacles'),
accentuated by the darker smudges around the eye. This feature was most
obvious when the bird was at rest but could also bee seen when it was in
flight.

Excuse me for not emailing everyone individually who has inquired about the
bird as I guess birding-aus is the best way to provide updates.

Cheers - Trevor Ford
