Subject: Wader declines in Victoria (Aust.)
Thought the following of interest to list members.
As I mentioned last year, the Victorian Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) has
made recommendations to list (under the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act) the
following two species of wader as threatened in Victoria.
Great Knot and Grey-tailed Tattler
Among the reasons given for the declines in each of the short Recommendation
Reports is the comment:
'There are three main threats to the long-term conservation of migratory
waterbirds generally: habitat loss, habitat degradation and harvesting of
waterbirds. The major threats to Great Knot appear to be from hunting and
habitat loss in China (Watkins 1993).'
It is widely understood that similar threats are acting on a number of waders
visiting Australia.
