Ringed Plover, Marlo, Vic.

The Ringed Plover was seen shortly after midday on 26th March on an exposed sandbank

in the estuary,  just east of the spit.  

 

The route we used was much more accessible than the Mot's Beach crossing, which I tried

on 15th March.   This time, following in the footsteps of a couple of fishermen, Brenda and I decided to cross just east of the spit, over two large sandbanks.   As we arrived at the first sandbank a mixed flock of red-necked stints and red-capped plover arrived on cue and began feeding busily.  As they weren't shy we approached to about three metres, and amongst them, EUREKA, was the Ringed Plover which stood out with its smart black and white colouring.   We couldn't believe our eyes, as it had taken us about ten minutes from parking the car to finding our target.    More birds flew in, some flew off, but the ringed plover was still there some twenty minutes later as we left.   We also noted a curlew sandpiper but no sanderling.

 

Low tide, according to the Lakes Entrance chart, was due at 1.00 p.m. that day, but

in the estuary we believe it would have been about an hour later.
