Good question. I know a lot of birders that subscribed to birding-aus for
a short time than unsubscribed. There seem to be two main reasons why
these people didn't stay with it.
1. They are not at all interested in twitching and see this forum as
existing mainly for twitchers
2. They were put off by the bickering, personal attacks and other rubbish
that Russell has now, more or less, got under control (there was another
completely unnecessary pot-shot at someone this morning).
Everyone has a different reason for being on birding-aus and it is that
diversity that makes this forum interesting. What people have to realise
is that it isn't for everyone. I personally do not ring any of the
birdlines because I have no interest at all in twitching. I enjoy seeing
new birds but I'm not going to go hundreds of kilometres out of my way to
see one. I go on trips where the chance of seeing something new is
enhanced. For example, I will be on my first pelagic weekend after this
out of Newcastle and there is no doubt I will see birds that I haven't
seen before. I wouldn't travel to Newcastle specifically to see a Ruff or
Lesser Yellowlegs however. That other people do is of no consequence to
me. Good on them if that is what they enjoy doing.
I don't think that birding-aus exists purely for twitchers, otherwise I
wouldn't still be here. I think it provides an interesting mix of issues.
If we maintain this, and keep away from personal attacks etc, it will
continue to be relevant.
