Subject: New bird recommendations (Victoria) - March 2002
For the information of list members. Note that this information is in reference
to the status of certain avifauna in Victoria only.
The Public Notices sections of the Victorian AGE and Weekly Times (Wed 13th
March) will have the following species of bird (or bird-related items)
recommended for listing under the Flora and Fauna Gaurantee (FFG) Act.
Final Recommendations
548 Acanthiza iredalei hedleyi - Slender-billed Thornbill
562 Calidris tenuirostris - Great Knot
554 Coracina maxima - Ground Cuckoo-Shrike
563 Heteroscelus brevipes - Grey-tailed Tattler
547 Pyrrholaemus brunneus - Redthroat
543 Rostratula benghalensis - Painted Snipe
557 Victorian Mallee bird community.
514 The spread of Phytophthora cinnamomi from infected sites into parks and
reserves, including roadsides, under the control of a state or local
government authority.
560 Threats to native flora and fauna arising from the use by the feral honeybee
Apis mellifera of nesting hollows and floral resources.
Preliminary Recommendations
The following species have received a Preliminary Recomendation for listing
under the FFG Act and public submissions are sought. Close of submissions on
the Preliminary Recommendations is 19 April 2002.
578 Calamanthus pyrrhopygius pyrrhopygius - Chestnut-rumped Heathwren
584 Diomedea cauta - Shy Albatross
559 Diomedea epomophora - Southern Royal Albatross
544 Diomedea exulans - Wandering Albatross
550 Geopelia cuneata - Diamond Dove
551 Phoebetria palpebrata - Light-mantled Albatross
556 Thalassarche bulleri - Buller
's Albatross
545 Thalassarche carteri - Indian Yellow-nosed Albatross
546 Thalassarche chrysostoma - Grey-headed Albatross
552 Turnix pyrrhothorax - Red-chested Button-Quail
Short (2-3 page) 'Recommendation Reports' which show how each species meets the
criteria under the FFG Act are available on the above items. Interested people
can contact me directly and supply a mailing address for forwarding any reports.
Please quote the nomination number appearing just before each species name.
Should the Minister for Environment & Conservation accept the Final
Recommendations, then the items should be added to the list of threatened taxa
in the FFG Act before the end of the year.
