Last week when cattle carting northeast of Charleville Qld, rain fell
and gave me an opportunity to look around for a day or two while the
roads dried out.
The highlight were a pair of Crested Hawk in open forest west of the
creek at my camp at 25.05 98S 146.36.81E. Both birds stayed about
(2-4/3/02) and the much larger female was approachable. They could be
nesting in the area which is on the Caldervale Road about 100 km
north of Augathella, Qld. Other birds nest building included Brown
Weebill and Pied Butcherbird and a Pied Currawong carrying nest
material.
There is a lot of broad acre land clearing of brigalow scrub going on
around the area at present. Out to the east is a road named Kyber
Road that runs south towards Augathella and in nearly every direction
scrub is being pulled down. Most of this ground is rocky and appears
to be marginal agricultural country at its best. Is land clearing
controlled in this area?
