I worked on Cattle Egret migration through the mid eighties to
mid-nineties with Shortland Wetlands Centre. It is a little early for
Cattle Egrets in Victoria but there are earlier reports.
Most of the Cattle Egret breeding colonies (perhaps all) in southern
Queensland and northern NSW would have had a very poor breeding season
this year due to very dry conditions. Although not as marked as the other
egrets which are more dependant upon wetlands for foraging Cattle Egret
breeding success is linked to dry/wet years. Simply, invertebrates are
easier to find in pasture during good seasons.
