Last Saturday, 16th Feb. on N.W. French Island, near Bulloke Swamp, we were
surprised to see a single Cattle Egret. It was still showing signs of
breeding plumage.A local resident said that there had been about 20 the
previous evening that came in before the storm.
This is approx.1 month or more earlier than usual for this part of Victoria.
Does any one have suggestions on why this would be so e.g.lack of breeding
success due to hot weater condition ,(has it been generally an unsuccessful
breeding season ?),the effects of the N.S.W. bushfires and flocks not
stopping at the usual places, etc.
Has any one else seen any earlier than usual birds ?
Thanks
Graham Beal
