On a section of the Coast Walk north from Garie Beach, Royal National Park,
Sydney today we were watching 3 Rock Warblers on some rocks at the top of
the climb. They were poking around the rocks and taking tiny morsels from
the surface as one would expect. One bird however began dramatic high speed
jumps about 600-800mm sideways often turning 180 degrees. It was most
peculiar and something akin to rapid display movements of some Manakins I
have watched in South America. At first I thought it was taking insects
from the air but I could not see any. Neither of the other birds joined in
this behaviour.
The birds were seen around 11.30am and when we returned past that spot
around 2pm.
BTW, talking to a friend who lives in Simpson Street Bundeena, a suburb
inside the Park, he had a Barn Owl on the wires outside his house in the
night when he returned late. He said the bird was sitting in the pouring
rain with its wings outstretched. He says he often sees owls on the wire
late at night catching food in the street light. Maybe a place to watch...
