Hi WTNT followers
My two most recent sightings were in Toolangi and Black Range State
Forests about 60 or 70 km NE of Melbourne.
On 19 Jan 2002 I saw one WTNT at 8.30 am at 37 27 40 s, 145 36 56 e.
The sky was clear and there were occasional light gusts of wind. It was
rather a mild day, neither hot nor cold. There were also some Tree
Martins flying about at the time.
On 25 Jan 2002 there were about 20 WTNTs at approx 4.00 pm at 37 32 03
s, 145 36 12 e. It was a warm to hot day and humid with about 30% cloud
cover and mostly calm with some light wind. There were thunder storms
later in the day and evening. The birds flew around at tree top level
and higher for a few minutes then flew off to the SSW.
I have been surprised at the low numbers of Needletails I have seen this
summer. Maybe they are flying higher or are just somewhere else.
Overall our summer has seemed a lot cooler this year.
Cheers,
Merrilyn.
