Stuart,

I was present at the Edithvale hide from 4pm until closing at 5pm.
The LT Stint was visible roosting, preening and occasionally feeding with a small group of Sharpies on the mudflat immediately in front of the hide.
Fantastic viewing of such an amazing bird !   Those not one for little brown-coloured waders may beg to differ but I certainly enjoyed my observations of the little fellow.

Cheers,

P.

Birdline Victoria Update No. 62
For the week ending: 3 February 2002

It was great to meet all the readers of Birdline Victoria who made it down
to Edithvale Wetlands yesterday, we got a bumper crowd of around 50 people,
but had very little luck with the Long-toed Stint.  The bird arrived at
around ten to one and only stayed for about 20 minutes.  On Sunday it
appeared for another ten minutes at around three, so its not being very
obliging!

Mike Carter went to Marlo on Sunday to look for the reported Little Ringed
Plover, and after wading the Snowy River he found a Ringed Plover.  There
have only been a handful of accepted sightings of this species, all of them
coming from the east coast of Australia and HANZAB cites only 3 reports in
Victoria, two at Jack Smith's Lake and one at Queenscliff.

2 February
Craig Morley and John Newman saw a Red-necked Phalarope at Hospital Swamp
near Geelong. It was on the private land near the Lake Road entrance to
Hospital Swamp; you need to ask permission from Tony Leen at the big house
nearest the entrance.  If no one is home write your name etc on the
blackboard next to the door. The bird was actually not on the big lake but
close to Lake Road itself, not far from where a small drain runs under the
road - A place where there were a lot of wood sandpipers a few years ago.
Craig can give directions if rung at a reasonable time; 5221 4604, thanks
Margaret Cameron.

2 February
A Spotted Harrier was seen flying over the Prince's Highway near the Avalon
Airport, thanks Russell Woodford.

27 January
At the Western Treatment Plant in Werribee at least one Glossy Ibis was seen
at the Austin Road Lagoons and at least 68 Freckled Ducks on the lagoon
between Lake Borrie and Kirk Point affording very close views, thanks
Neville Pamment.

27 January
A Long-toed Stint was seen from the bird hide at the Edithvale Wetlands,
thanks Denise Moore.

26 January
A Dollarbird and an all white European Green finch were seen at Bushy Park
on the Avon River in east Gippsland, thanks Duncan Fraser.

24 January
Six Swift Parrots flew over Debbie Colbourne and Julian Miles' block in the
morning but did not call, 15km north of Violet Town.

24 January
Several Turquoise Parrots were seen at Cabbage Tree Creek, East Gippsland,
beside road about 1km east of Cabbage Tree Creek Flora Reserve, thanks
Richard Alcorn.

23 January
A Square-tailed Kite was seen on the Cape Conran Nature Trail  walk, thanks
Richard Alcorn.

22 January
One Ringed Plover, apparently in breeding plumage, feeding at water's edge
on sandbar amongst a flock of 500 Red-necked Stints, at the Snowy River,
Marlo, adjacent to Little Tern breeding colony at river mouth, thanks
Richard Alcorn.

22 January
At Lakes Entrance there were three Lewin's Rails on the bank of the estuary
behind Eastern Beach Caravan Park near the bridge on Eastern Beach road, as
well as two Buff-banded Rails under the picnic tables at Burnt Bridge and
eight Nankeen Night-herons in the estuary at night at Eastern Beach, thanks
Laurie Living.

19 January
A pair of Banded Lapwings were seen on private property west of the RAAF
base at Point Cook, chasing a Collared Sparrowhawk, thanks Chris Tzaros.
