This field guide is highly recommended:

Mullarney, K., Svensson, L., Zetterstrom, D. & Grant, P.J. (1999). Collins
Bird Guide. (HarperCollins: London).

It's locally published & much cheaper now too.  I'm not sure where you might
get one around where you live, but mine came from www.AndrewIsles.com
