I find John's contributions fascinating.  And Philip's treatise on mimicry is delightfully informative.   Reading insights from diverse backgrounds is enriching and is often the best part of my day. 
Maybe John's interpretation of "mimicry" relates to the ability to mime (as in copy behaviour) rather than simply imitate sound.
