Hi all,
Just got back from a relaxing camping trip with 4 others to Moira State
Forest on the NSW side of the Murray river
about 3 hours north of Melbourne.Which by the way is the largest
naturally occuring River Red Gum forest in the world.
I had not been to this campsite in about 4-5 years and so far the usual
numbers
of campers has receded noticeably. Also i found out the European Carp
numbers have fallen dramatically,
so much so that native and exotic plants have reappeared near
riverbanks, which of course is fantastic.
Although this was not a birding trip, i did have the chance to record
birdlife in and around the general locality
(which is much easier to to via trailbike!) and also by a wonderful
half-day canoeing trip in and around
the Barmah Lakes.Highlights were (in and around campsite),: Nesting
White Breasted Woodswallows,Dollarbird,
Yellow Rosella,Southern Boobook,Sacred Kingfisher,Red-Backed
Kingfisher,Rainbow Beeeater,Brown Treecreeper,
Striated Pardalote,Little Friarbird,Blue Faced Honeyeater,Yellow Plumed
Honeyeater,Jacky Winter,White Winged Chough,
and Diamond Firetail - right near the riverbank.
Elsewhere: Biggest highlight was a Grey Goshawk off the Highway just
south of Shepparton, close up views of Swamp Harriers
and Whistling Kites? display flight of stooping toward each other and
clasping at each others talons upside down!,Wedge Tailed Eagle soaring
on thermal updraughts,Azure Kingfisher,Dusky Woodswallow,Tree Martin,and
Mistletoebird.
In all 68 species (that i can remember).Birdlist is below.
Also heard White Striped Freetail Bat, and saw a possible Yellow Footed
Antechinus(late afternoon in ground dwelling tree hollow).
My uncle had a "hopping rat or mouse",wander through his campsite(during
the day).My naive guess is Common Dunnart? can anyone help.
Cheers,
Mark Kliene.
