g'day all,

Re my note 28/10/2001 about NSW FOC members' Adrian O'Neill and Clive Meadows
sighting a Painted Snipe on the Leichhardt River just north of the Moondarra
Caravan Park (see http://menura.cse.unsw.edu.au:1080/2001/10/msg00551.html)

Today, I revisited the location to take some habitat photos for Danny Rogers' PS
survey.

Well, what do you know ?

As I was walking down into the river bed I passed by a big log and flushed a
beautiful male PS hiding under it.
It flew about 30m along the river and settled in heavy grass with only its head
and chest showing... but enough for what I hope will be some reasonable photos.

Last year I recorded PS at 2 bays at Lake Moondarra and this year at the above
location and also the horse paddocks next to the sewage ponds.

And for really top photos have a look at Raoul Slater's 2 photos of a PS nesting
near Derby.
They are in Australian Waterbirds, Peter Slater et al, Reed, 1987, ISNBN 0 7301
0190 8
pages 132-3

Regards, Bob Forsyth, Mount Isa, NW Qld.
