Hi Everyone,
I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas, and for those in proximity to
bushfire danger, I hope you were safe. A lot of native wildlife didn't fare
very well, but (trying to be positive) the fittest should have survived to
ensure that strong genes will prevail.
We conducted an exhausting survey of the Caloundra sandbanks yesterday, and
accomplished it despite heat haze, uncaring holidaymakers and restless
birds. The total tern count was 20,636, and you can read that as
conservative. You will see below a category called "Unidentified terns". We
are able to pick out the Crested Terns easily on the wing at dusk, but have
to lump Commons, Littles and White-winged Blacks into one category, as they
are of similar size and come in at such a rate that it is impossible for us
to be more accurate. Where the three latter species have been identified, it
was done on the sandbanks at rest.
Cheers,
Jill
