This provided a good excuse to go and check this afternoon (Thurs). No
Painted Snipe was visible, but other birders tell me that when last seen
(date not given) there were two of them - I can NOT confirm this
statement though. If they are attempting to breed there are acres of
Typha and reed to hide in. But the determined might be lucky by
searching the swamp edges very early in the morning or late in the
evening - they are supposed to be crepuscular after all. I should wear
mosquito repellent.
Meanwhile I found some interesting things, and either saw or heard about
50 species of birds. These included hearing Reed Warblers and Little
Grassbirds, seeing two immature Hoary-headed Grebes swimming in close
company with a feeding Teal (presumably using the duck as a 'beater'),
and finding a Long-necked Tortoise apparently laying eggs in an
excavation on the top of the Billabong bank.
